Working in Australia

Earn whilst you are travelling

It’s relatively straightforward for anyone from the UK to work and travel in Australia, but the one thing you’ll need is the right kind of visa. Visas can be granted for between 3-12 months but, if you intend to work, then you must make sure you get a special working holiday visa prior to travelling. These are valid for 12 months from the day you arrive in Australia and you are free to come and go to and from Australia as often as you wish within that 12 month period.

One point worthy of note is that working visas to Australia are generally only granted once in a lifetime, so if you intend to purely travel, it’s better to save your working application for when you intend to spend a whole year working with perhaps some other travel (from November 1, 2005 working holidaymakers who have worked as a seasonal worker in regional Australia for a minimum of 3 months are being invited to apply for a second working holiday visa of up to 12 months)

The working holiday programme and how to apply are detailed on this Australian Government website - http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/visiting_whm.htm

In general, Australia is a very easy to find work in. There are lots of seasonal jobs and there are also free newspapers targeted at travellers containing job advertisements. A popular source of seasonal employment is fruit picking, but there are also short term jobs in offices, finance, nursing, telemarketing, hospitality as well as au pair work.

TNT Magazine, a free publication for travellers in Australia as well as the UK, features job listings and is widely available at hostels, travel centres, train stations and airports. Their website has a harvest calendar, plus classified ads and advice for working travellers in Australia.
