Hobart, the second oldest and most southerly city in Australia, is the capital of Tasmania located in the south east area of the island. Hobart is a surrounded by Derwent River and towered over by Mount Wellington offering majestic mountainous views, unique fauna and flora and housing beautiful Georgian and Victorian buildings.
The city is moderate in size with the streets laid out in a grid, and the Elizabeth Street Mall being the centre. You'll also find a further shopping area along Elizabeth Street. To the north of the city is The Domain, a recreation centre, including the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. There is also a bridge crossing to the east and the airport.
The affluence of this nineteenth century trading port is still apparent in the number of historic buildings in Hobart's central business district, with most of the city's public institutions still housed in colonial and Georgian architecture.
Hobart combines the delightful old and the exciting new against a backdrop of mountain and sea. Hobart's historical centre is Salamanca Place, complete with cobble stone lanes,
sandstone warehouses, arts and crafts shops, cafes and restaurants.
