Travel to Australia

Health and Safety

Be Street Wise — Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. When you start travelling around a new country try to familiarise yourself with your surroundings during the day. Don't be too fast to trust strangers and never hitch-hike or accept lifts from people you don't know. Use ATMs during the day, when there are people around and try to rely more on credit cards and travellers cheques than cash.

Always protect your belongings — Keep your money, tickets and passport safe and secure and never leave your valuables. Keep a photocopy of your passport and all other important documents in a safe place.

Leave an itinerary of your trip — Always let people know where you are going and stay in touch with people back home regularly.

Reduce the risk of DVT — Deep vein thrombosis or DVT occurs when the flow of blood is restricted in a vein, and a clot forms. Long distance flights may contribute to the risk of DVT and as the flight is particularly long from the UK to Australia it is worth taking preventative measures on the plane: taking drug thinning drugs such as aspirin; wearing flight socks; foot exercises whilst sitting down and taking regular walks around the cabin.

Keep a small first-aid kit with you containing over the counter medicines equipped to deal with small health hazards. A tube of antiseptic, plasters, headache pills and stomach upsets medicines are essential.
