The capital of northern Australia, Darwin is located in the far north of the Northern Territory, west of Arnhem Land and enjoys a relaxed, tropical lifestyle.

Named, after the naturalist Charles Darwin, the city has a population of about 70,000 and about half the total population of Australia's Northern Territory lives within about 25 miles of Darwin.

Darwin is an ideal base for visits to spectacular World Heritage listed areas, surrounding National Parks and attractions including Kakadu National Park. Kakadu is a cultural landscape that covers almost 20,000 square kilometres. The park is really diverse and contains several species of birds, reptiles, frogs and insects and is rich in ancient Aboriginal rock art.

The Darwin Festival, a vibrant arts and cultural event is held each year in Darwin's dry season. The festival has local and touring performances and events including outdoor concerts, workshops, theatre, dance, music, comedy and cabaret, film and visual arts.

In the heart of Darwin are the Botanical Gardens, 34 hectares of trees, shrubs and flowering plants in a tropical garden with fountains, picnic lawns and barbecue facilities.
