Adelaide is a diverse and cosmopolitan city of around 1.2 million people. The city has a mild Mediterranean climate and has the closest and most accessible beaches of an Australian Capital City with Glenelg, the magnificent white, sandy beach, being the most popular.
The city has a rich cultural life with a large number of galleries and theatres and the first purpose built convention centre in Australia.
The city is also host to one of the world's leading biennial arts festivals. Running since the 1960's, the Adelaide Arts Festival takes place in March on
even numbered years with live drama, dance art, opera and musical events.
In odd numbered years the Womadelaide outdoor festival of world music and dance takes place in February.
Another major attraction is the Adelaide Botanic Garden which is a historic garden on the Adelaide Plains. Native and exotic plant collections are showcased, including palms,
cycads, bromeliads and many magnificent mature trees and shrubs.
